Do you have to study at College to study abroad?

Would taking a gap year to study abroad before going to college be a bad idea?

  • I have always wanted to study abroad, but have never had the chance. I have recently found several reputable, relatively inexpensive programs that sound like great opportunities. However, as I am halfway through my junior year of high school, all of the application deadlines for each of the programs have come to pass, meaning I am unable to study abroad for my senior year of high school. However, I could do a gap year. I'm not sure how wise of a decision this would be. I have no idea how a gap year even works, which brings me to my questions. How exactly does a gap year work? How would it effect my going to college? Is it a good idea, or would it set me back? I do very well in school, and I don't want to accidentally throw all that away by doing something that would be detrimental to my education. However, it's likely I won't have a chance to study abroad once I'm in college. I doubt I'll be able to afford it once I get to college and I likely won't have the time. I plan on being in school for a long time too, as it is my goal to become a doctor, probably a surgeon. It seems that a one year delay in my college education wouldn't do much, but I'm not sure. So this brings me to ask, is taking a gap year to study abroad a bad idea, or a good one?

  • Answer:

An excellent idea!! It will give you an idea of what your adult life will look like. You can have wonderful opportunities and explore and take a "breather" from school. Also, it looks good on college applications because you will be considered well-rounded. It is a decision that I wish I would have made when I graduated. It is one of the very few regrets that I have now. I am a junior in college and I am married and pregnant as well as with the same company for 4 years. My life is pretty stable now and living abroad would definitely set me back at this point. I have to wait until I finish my Master's now before I can go. Do it while you are young and can afford to go!!

Im answering because you asked:) So i dont know to much about this but my grandpa recomended me to take a year off of college to figure out what to do and get some money first he said a lot of his friends that did that were very successful! I really want to do that but i just want to get through college and open a business doing something.. You could always just go to community part time?

Studying abroad is very expensive, however it shouldn't interfere with college work. I had an opportunity to take credit classes elsewhere however I ended up not having enough money.. But I would have been doing coursework related to my major. If you have the money to devote to it, sure, but otherwise I'd leave it alone.

I think it would be better to do the first 2 years of college. After high school, you still have every thing you learned fresh in your brain and you will need it for college. If you take a year off, it will just fall right out. Try going to college for 2 years and getting used to it before taking a gap.

It depends if it's going to help your future career or not. If its just for a new experience it could be a waste of time or the best decision you ever make. I'd say if you're dead set on your major, then start college as soon as possible, but if you're still kind of unsure then study abroad for the experience and to mature while you're there and figure out what you really want to do, so you won't end up changing majors in the middle of your junior year or something.
