How to go to college in England?

How would I go about trying to come to England from the U.S for college?

  • I'm currently a freshman in college in the U.S and I've always wanted to study abroad in England. Hopefully within the next year or two. I plan on going into nursing and I am a independent person. I also don't know anyone in England that I could ask. I was wondering what should I be doing now to make this possible, as well as the difficulty of doing such? Also the environment of this country? Such as living expenses maybe. The attitudes of English people towards American and just daily life in England.

Well I have lived in England, California and Spain and as a base I love England, bar the weather!! It is all dependant on where you live in England. the further north the colder it gets. Obviously London is the capital city therefore if you are into city living then London is the place. There is plenty of stuff to do and places to visit. I however live in Birmingham which is the 2nd City. This city is not as spread out as London. You are able to get anywhere you want within Birmingham in a matter of minutes, NOT HOURS like in London. Again living expenses is all based on where you live. City Centres are expensive especially in London. the key is to fins somewhere just out of the city. The English countryside is lovely and very scenic. Ranging from green hills, to mountain ranges and also beautiful coasts. Cornwall is lovely in the summer. With regards to your studies. It is possible for overseas students to apply for college/university here. Not sure what a freshman is but University starts at the age of about 18. I would start applying asap as places are very scarce and people here are finding it difficult to get into a University they like. If you go to: http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/nonukstudents/ This should tell you all you need to know about studying in England

you need to start with the website UCAS. first step for anything unviersity related in the UK. if you have quite a bit of money, I would strongly recommend London. if you don't have loads of cash though, its probably not worth bothering. I'm a student in the capital and get by mostly on government loans and grants, which you won't get. unless you get a scholarship, which is rare for a foreign student. some living expenses - food, drink, bills - are similar across the UK. but accommodation costs differ hugely. and I mean hugely. so research carefully. English people generally like Americans (more so since Obama anyway) except when the stereotypically thick few ask stupid questions about what should be general knowledge, like the formation of Europe, or anything outside the US.

Okay, well although I may not be able to help answer your initial question about how you get from the U.S to England, I am happy to tell you a bit about England itself. One major point is that living costs in England are more expensive than the U.S, and by that I mean for clothing, housing, etc. As for the environment, depending on where you are planning on going to, some areas are quite rural and others, like most major towns and cities, are congested and busy, so it's up to you whether you prefer the relaxation of the countryside, or the buzz of the city. Once again though, living directly in the cities is expensive, as is living directly in the countryside, so you might prefer to be in between. Finally, as for the attitude towards Americans, I don't think this is even an issue and I'm sure you'll fit in fine. England is a multicultural country and there are many nationalities here, similar to America. Ignore the first answerer as I too live in England, and do not find it 'crap' at all. I hope you enjoy your time studying in England and I wish you well for the future.
