What country is better to study abroad in, England or Italy?
-
I am a student from the state of Washington in the United States of course and am majoring in management information systems (which is a business degree if you did not originally know that, most people don't). While I have yet to take Italian I am thinking I will get at least a year of the language before I go, and England obviously I don't need to study the language. While I enjoy sports, movies, and music both places have alot of that and I am quite sure while they both offer very different lifestyles I can adapt and was just wondering what other people think because any input would help. Thanks

I'm glad to hear that you are considering studying abroad. Wherever you go, it will be a great experience. First, all of the above is correct. If you plan on taking courses in the home country's language, England would be your best option. Italian is a difficult language to master (like any other), and you would be required to take a language proficiency exam before entering any Italian program. However, there are always options. I recommend that you check with your school's study abroad adviser to see if there are any programs that offer courses taught in English in Italy. There also many programs that offer intensive language courses to help you with your Italian while you're taking courses in English. Many programs and universities realize that studying abroad isn't all about the language. A fair chunk of it is about culture, and making cross-cultural connections. Therefore, many programs help students get past the language barrier and dive into cultures abroad...a chance they would otherwise not have. As such, there's a lot of programs out there that cater to English speaking students. It's just a matter of finding one that suits you. Look at these for starters: http://www.necaflorence.com/neca_programs.htm http://www.studyabroaditaly.com/ I personally studied in England, and found the experience absolutely amazing. Just know that you have options for both countries. After you look through a few programs, be sure to talk to you education abroad office. Have fun abroad!! :D

I am going to england. Iv studied Italian for 6 years, and I still would not feel adequate to follow tertiary lectures in the language, and I am reasonably fluent, and have lived there without studying and coped. However University language and assignments etc cannot be done very well with only a year of Uni level language. Unless you want to be setback somewhat in your degree, would choose England. I am studying there next year, from Australia and am drawn to the area because though I speak several languages, I can speak in my native tongue, and I have the opportunity to travel to Italy, and France during my breaks in order to better my language skills in those languages. My advice to you, choose a great uni in the UK, so your grades dont suffer so much with the language barrier, and make a serious effort to spend all your breaks, and time before and after your study in Italy (you can get there on a bullet train reall cheaply and fastly) just living, talking to people, introducing yourself, ordering food and staying in backpacker accommodation or homestays and I guarentee your language skills will improve immensly with that.

Obviously The UK!!! ;-) If you have your heart set on going to Italy, you can get very cheap flights from the UK to Italy with Ryan-Air. The last time I flew I paid £55 for a return ticket! Good Luck in your choices!!!!
