Where to study abroad if I'm heavily tattooed?
-
I'm a 22 year old woman in college, looking to study abroad my last semester. I am heavily tattooed, including a sleeve, and by the time I go abroad I will have a rather large leg piece as well. I also have a nose ring. None of my tattoos are offensive, in fact all are quite beautiful and nicely done. But I know not all countries are as accepting of tattoos as America. I have tried searching the web for things like "most tattooed countries" to find a good list of places, but I keep coming up empty. Does anyone have advice on where I should study abroad? I don't much care where I go, I just want an adventure. I just don't want to go somewhere where having tattoos will be an issue. One place I'm considering now is Thailand. Any and all advice would be appreciated!

Answer:
With the exception of a few Asian countries, such as India,Iran, Pakistan, Mslaysia and China and Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar and bahrain, none will have a problem eith your body art. Whether westernised or not, they won't have s problem. In Egypt, for example, body spinet, generally facial and on the hands, is part and parcel of their ancient culture. It is still upheld by many.

No two places are alike, remember that and you'll be more than fine. With tattoos you will always get certain people looking at you when you go down the street in amazement. Modern countries all mostly have open views but I would suggest to you Australia - very friendly and outgoing people and loads of variety in the types of people you meet so you are likely to find a lot of other people with tattoos and piercings. In the UK people cab be more concervative (lol the government is anyway) and a friend of mine got rejected from Cambridge for his appearance.

Non conservative areas in westernised societies.
Any "westernized" country will not have issues with your tattoos (think places like Australia, New Zealand, England, France, Sweden, etc.) Though I am not positive, I would also venture that any place that has traditional tattoos would probably have less of an issue with you having them. At the same time though, unless your tattoos are easily concealable, I would avoid studying somewhere like Japan where tattoos are associated with the yakuza (it's possible that they wouldn't cause you much trouble in Japan, but it's also possible that they will. Japan is an incredible place, but if I were heavily tattooed I wouldn't want to decide to study there without having visited it first).
I'm in India at the moment and some tribals even have to get tattoos. Although I'm in Bangalore, and it's a heavily rock music/industrial music listening crowd and a lot of people have tattoos here. Especially the guys and girls that are in rock bands. You can check out Bangalore's rock scene by just googling it so you'll know they are very accepting of tattoos and piercings. If you like the vibe, you can consider doing an internship or volunteer work there through Leave UR Mark: http://www.leaveurmark.com I also happened to find some girls blog on the progressiveness of the city: http://rockandrollbangalore.wordpress.com/
