Should I study abroad in england for junior year?

I want to study abroad in England for a semester my junior year in high school. What are some good programs?

  • I also need some advice for getting my parents to agree to let me go. I really want a cultural experience, and it would be wonderful for me to go away for at least a semester. Since I speak english, the language thig wouldn't be an issue. I am more interested in the cultural difference between here and England, however minimal it may be. Any help would be very greatly appreciated. (Especially about what programs are best for students studying abroad!) Thanks!

    Well, to start, OB is wrong. England DOES allow high school exchanges, YFU does them (www.YFU.org). However, I question why you would really want to go to England? In persuading your parents to allow an exchange, you're missing one of the biggest benefits -- language immersion! If you become fluent in another language, you can add $10,000 or more per year to your base salary! American companies are crying for those with linguistic abilities! Also, a cultural experience wouldn't be nearly as different from here as it would be to a country with a different language! Some points to make to your parents: maturity, broadening horizons, language ability AND colleges and universities LOVE exchange students, to the point where many offer preferred admissions and/or scholarship money. Does your school have AFS club? AFS is the best study abroad program. You live in a family's home for as long as you want and where ever you want.

AFS is a good program with a long history of placing students abroad. Youth for Understanding is another good program.

AFS does not offer programs to England because England does not allow high school exchangers to come there (I think somewhere had a program, but it was dropped because no one was willing to pay $30,000 for a month in the summer). To get my parents to let me go, I made a powerpoint of all the benefits. I showed them how I was going to pay for it! And I also have acted mature so that they would feel comfortable letting me live with other families. I would suggest you look at Australia and New Zealand, because they both speak English, and programs are offered to there. If you are really set on going to England, and wouldn't mind settling for a summer program, you could check into the programs at Oxbridge, and in Scotland, the summer programs at the University of St. Andrews.
