How to become an exchange student?

  • I'm from the UK and i am 15. I really want to learn more about the world and see more places. I've heard lots about exchange programmes and researched about them because i would love to become an exchange student. The only thing is, all the programmes seem to be for at least a year and I do well in school and after doing my standard grades this may i should be going on to do well in higher and i wouldn't want to disrupt my education. I also don't like the thought of going away for a whole year as i wouldn't want to leave my sister before she is older. I've heard of people from other schools going on an exchange programme but only for a few weeks, how do i become a short-term exchange student?!

    It sounds like you're looking for an overseas volunteer opportunity. You could go to almost any spot, but you'd not receive aid. There are programs in Central America, many countries of Africa (Namibia), etc. Also, check out Rotary.

I've been looking into this as well, there are 3 main organizations. AFS, YFU and Rotary. YFU isn't operating in the UK though. I think it was on the Rotary site, there's a section called 15 - 19 and they are for short term exchanges, being from i think 2 weeks to 3 months, I am not completely sure. Check out the sites for them, also it depends where you want to go. I've heard they're quite expensive, of course again depending on where you want to go. People who have been with AFS say that they didn't organize enough activites, and is quite expensive, and with the Rotary, it's cheaper but a lot more competitive, and with more activites :)
