What are the requirements for atmospheric science at UBC?

UBC or SFU Surrey for computer science?

  • I'm currently in grade 12 and I want to be trained in a field of computers to be a programmer, or something doing with systems( maybe a DBA in the future) and I'm lost where i should go (assuming i get accepted into both). I keep hearing that SFU is more known for their computer science programs but I'm not sure if that's also true for the Surrey campus. I've applied for this 4-year program exclusive to SFU Surrey only. Here are my pros and cons: pro's: -Same bus that i take to school 1 block away from my house also goes to Surrey Central. -there's a mall under SFU Surrey so that's unlimited supply of food!!!!!!! -My life doesn't change much, and i travel less than an hour a day to school and back(to UBC it's 3 hours a day from where i live). -I love physics and i heard you can mix classes at SFU. I just want to learn a bit more physics for my own curiosity(i watch a lot of documentaries about modern physics which gets me excited lol), not sure if that's an option at SFU Surrey as it is pretty small. cons:-I'm not sure if SFU will look as good on my resume for my first job( since everyone keeps saying over exaggerated things about UBC's prestige). I like computers and I will probably work really hard and love learning the subject no matter which school i go to.

  • Answer:

UBC has an outstanding Computer Science program- in the most recent QS World University Subject Rankings, UBC placed at 26th in the world in Computer Science and Information Systems, as opposed to SFU's placement in the 150-200 group: http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2011/subject-rankings/engineering/computer-science. If you're interested in mixing in more physics classes, you can absolutely do that at UBC, either by focusing your elective courses within physics, or even by doing a combined major in Physics and Computer Science. More information about the combined major program is available on the Computer Science website: https://www.cs.ubc.ca/students/undergrad/degree-programs If you're concerned about your commute to UBC, keep in mind that students coming directly from high school are guaranteed a place in residence as long as they meet all of the application deadlines along the way (http://www.housing.ubc.ca/apply-info/priority-access). Living on campus is a great way to make the most of your time at university. if you do commute, we also offer a commuter student hostel which is reasonably priced, so it's easy to stay overnight once in a while if you've got a study session, exam, or extracurricular that's running later in the evening. You can see more information here: http://www.housing.ubc.ca/student-residences-van/commuter-hostel.
