Are there any cheap volunteering abroad programs??

Free/ Inexpensive Gap Year volunteering programs abroad.?

  • I'm thinking about taking a year off before college and volunteering abroad, however, most of the Gap Year programs I've found online cost from 10,000- 30,000, which is kind of insane, considering the fact the the person is volunteering, not vacationing. So, are there any programs that are inexpensive or free? I'm open to all kinds of volunteering (Orphanage work, Environmental work, Teaching English, etc)

  • Answer:

Oh my god $10,000-$30,000 is absolutely ridiculous! While volunteering abroad does cost some money, it should not be that much. Here is my advice to you. Go with a volunteer abroad program for the first 3 months and then you will be comfortable enough in the country to stay for the remaining 9 months on your own. So you may pay around $3,000 for the first 3 months and then it will be much cheaper after you understand the local currency, the cheaper housing options, cook your food, etc. So that way you'll probably be spending no more than around 8 thousand in total for the entire year. Here are some good volunteer/internship projects through Leave UR Mark. There are orphanage and teaching english projects that are not on the website yet, but you have to email them for the full list.
