How do I go about being a foreign exchange student?

I want to go to the UK as a foreign exchange student...?

  • I am from America, and I was wondering what I can do to go to the United Kingdom as a foreign exchange student. I am looking for the cheapest and best program out there. I need as much info as possible.

Hello! Normally I wouldn't just post a link, but it just so happens I *just* wrote a long blog post about this the other day. Short answer: if you're a high school student, it isn't going to happen. If you're a college student, most universities have a semester in the UK program available. You can read my blog post which explains why American high school students can't be exchange students to the UK (basically: there are no visas): http://highschoolexchange.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/american-reality-check-no-you-cant-be-an-exchange-student-to-england/. If you're still interested in being a foreign exchange student but to another destination, you should look at Rotary, AFS & CIEE -- all have scholarships available to other countries (such as Germany, Korea, and more). I had the same dream when I was 15, and the best thing I ever did was get a reality check and go to Germany instead. I spent almost a year living in London during and after college -- it's MUCH more fun when you're an adult, trust me! Good luck!
