How can you study abroad in high school?

Can you study abroad right after high school?

  • My daughter did not get into her first choice college. She was accepted to second choice, but her goal is to study abroad in Spain and actually pursue a career overseas. She is thinking of enrolling in a study abroad program right out of high school. She'd like to go to salamanca. What are the best companies to go through? Do you have to be enrolled in an american university or can you go directly through a company and earn credits from a foreign university?

There are two ways she can approach this issue. One way is to do some research. This would mean contacting the nearest Spanish Consulate to ask about such things as the application process, type of visa needed, the requirements for that visa, if she would be eligible for any funding in Spain, language requirements, and once she completes her degree in Spain can she work in Spain. They may not be able to answer all questions but hopefully they would be able to refer her to the right people who could answer the questions for he. Once she receives the information she can decide if she wants to pursue direct application to the university. Second option would be to attending a university that has a study abroad program in Spain and then use the program to study a year in Spain. The best route for her will ultimately depend on what she wants to do and the rules of the university she attends. For example if she is going to study a year in Spain then she will need to ensure that the university she is attending in the US will accept the credits from the Spanish university. However if she is wanting to get her degree in Spain then worrying about transferring of credits should not be an issue since she will get her degree in Spain. The only time this may become an issue if she wants to do her graduate degree in the US or the field requires a degree to be licensed (e.g. nursing, social worker, or doctor to name a few). At that point she will need to inquire if the credits from the Spanish university will be accepted.

I participated in a fabulous program, called HomeStay Spain in SPAIN. After speaking with other kids in the group who had participated in other exchange programs abroad we decided this was the best! If you are interested in a lifestyle immersion experience and willing to learn about Spanish Culture and Lifestyle, this is the most amazing program available. The beautiful and safe town of Santander is known for its cultural refinement, and an atmosphere typical of old Spain. It is so much fun!!! And we learned so much!!!! It was so enriching. I LOVED IT!!! Both my sister and I participated different summers and we had a blast! We made so many good friends we still keep in touch with! The program is really well planned out and people are lovely! Many host families have teens. They even allow you to come with a friend to stay in same host family home or in a different home. And if you sign up early they allow you to choose from the available host families for a perfect fit. Check their website www.beautifulspain.com Before deciding among different programs I had a chance to speak with some contacts that had participated in this program and my parents did as well. Everyone spoke wonders about this program, the host families and the local director Nuria, who is such a nice lady. This program is considered the most complete exposure to a foreign country because as they say it is true that it combines CLASSES (art, debate, street talk, folklore, DANCING classes, among others) with FUN and EXCITING ACTIVITIES such as Latin Dance Classes, Bullfight, Boat Excursion, etc…, FULL DAY OUTINGS to places of historical and cultural interest such as prehistoric Altamira Caves, Guggenheim Museum, Roman Ruins, "Capricho de Gaudi", Roman Route Hiking adventure, etc... are also ALL INCLUDED IN THE PRICE while living with a local, loving and carefully selected HOST FAMILY. I know this program allows you to choose from several host families (the type of things this program does, no other program would ever) in order for everyone to be happy.
