Going to Holland as a foreign exchange student?

What's a good gift for a going-home party for a foreign exchange student?

  • I'm going to a going away party tomorrow for two foreign exchange students who stayed with the same family and are both going back to their respective countries. Would cash be an inappropriate gift? What are some other ideas? I am their age and became friends with both of them.

  • Answer:

a cleverly disguised trinket for holding hand sanitizer something from a vitamin shop (like pill carrier) a nice fictional book like harry potter or something that's a best-seller since i bet they're tired of reading textbooks and can use something refreshing to read movie-coupon gift certificates (lots o movies coming out like last airbender and toy story 3) a nice planner to keep notes and important dates in, a framed picture of friends and family memory cards for memorable moments

a gift is not expected at a going away party, but if you choose to give a gift, keep in mind that their luggage is probably jam-packed and weight is an important issue. cash is not appropriate. we have hosted and are friends with many exchange students... most are boys, but I've noticed that their sisters and girlfriends all seem to want lotions from Victoria's secret, or at least the boys think that they do. How about a goodie bag for the trip home - snacks and maybe a magazine or two (consider a FIFA world cup magazine in English if they are soccer fans.) Most of the exchange students this year love Abercrombie and Fitch, maybe a tshirt? But different students have different tastes... Since the 4th of July is coming up you might find something fun like stars and stripes flipflops... Our exchange student this year really wanted a license tag from our state... it worked out well because this was the year that the state changed tags, so I had one ready for him... OH! In our state cars are only tagged on the back, and people sometimes put tags on the front of the car just for fun... one tag that is available is of the state flag. Something like that would be fun and flat, so it would be easy to pack and not add weight.

Not enough time to get by tomorrow, but in the future, maybe a personalized cookbook?

Yes cash would be innapropriate sp if you're their age. I'd go for something that reminds them of the country. Maybe a book about your city with lots of pictures
