What american state is the best to study a masters degree in?
-
I'm currently in my first year of study at a university in London studying Psychology (I'm a UK Citizen) and recently I've taken to the idea of studying a masters degree abroad, ideally in America. I've spoken to the study abroad department at my uni and they have told me the first step is to choose whereabouts I would want to study. But there's so many places in America I would potentially love to live in and so I'm having a really hard time trying to decide where to even begin looking! I was wondering if anyone else has done this and where they studied and what they thought of the area? Or if anyone has any good advice of how I should go about picking somewhere! If it helps I'm hoping to go into occupational psychology Thanks :)

Answer:
Don't plan on working in the US just because you get a masters degree in the US. You are not likely to qualify for an employment visa or find any employer willing to spend the time, money & hassle getting you a temporary employment visa if you qualify. There's a glut of psychologists of various specialties in the US. As for school, it is not the state where you study but the grad school which matters. You will have to investigate occupational psychology programs at the various grad schools to see which is most suitable for you. Read the professional journals to see who is doing what research-wise and which universities they teach at. Then you have to apply for admission, if you can meet all of the school's requirements. You will also need to prove you have sufficient funds for all school expenses, plus all living expenses, plus return transportation to your country of citizenship to apply for a student visa.

Any state in the union potentially offers a top master's degree in Occupational Psychology. There are resources here: http://www.psychgrad.org/. I think you'll find it more commonly called industrial/organizational psych here in the states. Most of our "state" schools will be less costly. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/psychology-rankings

There are very good places to study psychology in every section of the US. Select where you want to live, and look there. Ask your professors how to find where the experts in occupational psychology in the US teach. It involves investigation in professional journals.
