Should I study abroad in England, Ireland, or Scotland?

Ireland or Scotland to study abroad?

  • I'm a second year Music student from Canada, and I'm planning to study abroad in my 4th year, but I need to start planning right away. I've always been fascinated with the UK, and I've visited England for a few days on a trip (and loved it!), but I'm interested in studying in either Ireland or Scotland. I come from a Scottish background, and I'm interested in getting in touch with my roots a little, but I've also had a lot of Irish influence on my hobbies and interests (particularly music). Among many others, my university offers exchange programs in Belfast and Edinburgh, and I can't decide between the two. I'd most likely be going in the second semester (Jan-May.) I come from a city of just over 1 million people (which I consider to be a lot), and the winter is very cold and dry, with a lot of snow. I don't very much like crowded places (the one thing I disliked about London), although I'd like to be somewhere with a good university scene, and a lot to do. As far as I can get from a traditional Canadian winter, the better. I don't mind rain. Cost is also important. I'm very friendly, and like to associate with friendly people, and learn about where they come from, and I like going out and having a good time. I go to school only 3 hours from where I live, so which place would be more kind to someone who hasn't strayed too far from their backyard?

  • Answer:

Being Irish born myself, you can probably guess what my answer will be. That said, the Irish have a great reputation for being very welcoming to those from far away and of exceptional generosity. While Belfast is far from being a city on a par with say London or Edinburgh, it does have its own beauty. The most important thing of all though is, the Irish sense of humour. You will laugh every day until you explode.

If you have a specific interest in Irish music, I'd go to Ireland. If you are in Belfast, Scotland is only a ferry ride away anyway. You won't find a cold, dry winter with a lot of snow anywhere in the UK, so no worries there.
