Can I host a foreign college student?

Help with my Host Family Letter?

  • I am applying to go as an exchange student to the U.S and am required to write a letter for my host family, could you please help me with this rough draft, what could I change to make it better. Also my dream scenario would be to be placed somewhere close to a beach (maybe somewhere in California or Florida) preferably in a big city (although I realize I might end up anywhere and am OK with that) is there anything I can do to increase my chances of that. Thank you in advance, here it is, Dear Host Family, My name is xxxxx xxxxxxxx and I am a 17 year old boy from xxxxxxx. I live with my mother xxxx (43), my father xxxxxx (43) and my little brother xxxxxx (14). My mother is currently teaching at a local elementary school, whilst at the same time completing her master's degree in literacy and my father is a golf pro. I am very excited to be spending a year abroad, and it almost feels as if I was born to do this. I hope that by going into a completely foreign country all on my own, I will learn more about how to live on my own and solve problems on my own wit. I am an extremely well-natured, laid-back guy. I love to laugh! If you ask anyone who knows me, they will tell you that I can’t go a day without laughter. I enjoy life and I like to make others enjoy it too. On the other hand, I can be serious at times. I understand that even though laughter is good for the soul, there are times that call for a more sober attitude. Especially in school, I take my work seriously. My friends and family would describe me as a cheery, happy, talkative person. This is true enough, however I can be quiet until I feel comfortable around people and my surroundings. Once I get the feel for things, I might not stop talking! I love to tell stories and jokes and my friends and family have probably heard hundreds of them. I also love to talk with others and hear about their own experiences and adventures in life. In school, I am an above average student. I enjoy taking challenging courses, mostly in foreign languages. I am not very strong in math, but I do enjoy biology. This year I am taking courses in Economy, Biology, Nutrition, Pschychology and Math among others. I am planning to go to college but have not yet decided what I wish to study, although I am quite interested in maby becoming a doctor. In my spare time, I enjoy the same stuff most kids my age do, surfing the internet, watching television and playing video games. I like listening to music, especially hip hop and rap and going to the movies. Another thing I like to do is go to the beach or go for a swim, in Iceland there aren't any beaches close to where I live but instead when it gets warm in the summer I love to go for a swim, whether it's a pool or the ocean it doesn't matter, when i've travelled to warmer countries I always spend a lot of time on the beach. My favorite thing to do is play basketball, i've been playing with the local junior team for some years now and it's something I take very seriously, I love to play but I also love watching basketball, especially the NBA. I don't have any one team that I support but I would say I like the L.A Lakers and the Chicago Bulls the most and my favorite current players who I look up to are Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose and Chris Paul. I hope that by spending a year on an exchange, I can learn about another culture and learn how to live in it. In addition, I hope to teach people in my host country about Iceland. I realize that there will be many trials and that it won’t be easy, but that’s all part of the fun!

  • Answer:

I think it sounds good. Be sure to check it for errors for example "although I am quite interested in maby* becoming a doctor." maby=maybe(I'm sure you knew that though)
