How do I convince my parents to host a foreign exchange student?

How do I convince my parents to let me be a foreign exchange student?

  • I REALLY want to be a foreign exchange student although my parents won't let me. I totally understand their concerns. I am earning all of the money myself hoping that it will help convince them. I am hoping to go during my junior year so I would need to apply this fall. I would give anything in the world to be able to go. Any ideas on how to address the following issues? -They are concerned about my host family. My mom especially feels uncomfortable about me staying with another family. She realizes that they are screened and everything but is still REALLY hesitant. -Would it look good on a college application? (They're concerned about me getting behind in school even though right now I am in all honors classes and year ahead in math science and will have AP english in 10th grade and I have told them that I would take summer school so I can get my credits) Thanks so much!! If you have any personal experiences of being an exchange student or of a host that I can share with them that would be great! Thanks again!

  • Answer:

If you can't convince them it's not the end of the world. There's always college for being an exchange student. If your parents feel concerned, I don't think there's anything you can do to make them unconcerned. You can only insist that you want to go, and when you're there keep in touch with them.

what you have to do is prove yourslef worthy. you have to know the material their and possibly say you are going with trust worthy friends. or you could "let it go" and then a day later complipent her on her looks and EVERYTHING! then ask again. be really good and totally make her belive you changed into a responsible strong independant person. Make your self look more grown up. but DONT be mean and BEG!

Simple. Refuse to eat or speak until they relent. Bring some former students over to share their experiences, or find write ups online for her to read. Go with a reputable company, our german exchange student got sexually advanced-upon by her previous host - that's how we ended up with her. So shite does happen.

Not hurry! you can get more communication with your parents. and slowly persuade them. Study hard, and trying to be independent.tell your parents in fact that you can do it and will do very well. Good luck!!

oh, wow huge coincidence i want to do this terribly and have been searching info for the past couple days! i was waiting for someone to ask this i haven't built up the courage to ask my parent... anyway for you- do you know anyone else who has done this before? have your parents talk to there parents and the child and let them know how it will help in the longterm for college and all that fun stuff.

There is a very easy answer to your question. Once your parents take the interest in speaking personally to any former participant of the program and their parents, they will trust it will be the best of the experiences that will not only add to your resume but also will enhance your college application not to mention all the advantages during your professional career of speaking a foreign language. I am sure that those contacts and references will be provided by the program of your choice. I asked the program I participated with and they offered a few and contacted them. They spoke so highly and positively about it that my parents did not hesitate for a minute to let me go. I find Spanish is the best as 50 million people speak it in the US and also is the second most spoken language after English. I can tell you, as per your request, about my personal experience. I participated in a fabulous program, called HomeStay Spain in SPAIN. After speaking with other kids in the group who had participated in other exchange programs abroad we decided this was the best! If you are interested in a lifestyle immersion experience and willing to learn about Spanish Culture and Lifestyle, this is the most amazing program available. The beautiful and safe town of Santander is known for its cultural refinement, and an atmosphere typical of old Spain. It is so much fun!!! And we learned so much!!!! It was so enriching. I LOVED IT!!! Both my sister and I participated different summers and we had a blast! We made so many good friends we still keep in touch with! The program is really well planned out and people are lovely! Many host families have teens. They even allow you to come with a friend to stay in same host family home or in a different home. And if you sign up early they allow you to choose from the available host families for a perfect fit. Check their website www.beautifulspain.com Before deciding among different programs I had a chance to speak with some contacts that had participated in this program and my parents did as well. Everyone spoke wonders about this program, the host families and the local director Nuria, who is such a nice lady,... She is usually in Florida at this time of the year, so that means that you may be able to talk to her on the phone once you contact them through their web site. This program is considered the most complete exposure to a foreign country because as they say it is true that it combines CLASSES (art, debate, street talk, folklore, DANCING classes, among others) with FUN and EXCITING ACTIVITIES such as Latin Dance Classes, Bullfight, Boat Excursion, etc…, FULL DAY OUTINGS to places of historical and cultural interest such as prehistoric Altamira Caves, Guggenheim Museum, Roman Ruins, "Capricho de Gaudi", Roman Route Hiking adventure, etc... are also ALL INCLUDED IN THE PRICE while living with a local, loving and carefully selected HOST FAMILY. I know this program allows you to choose from several host families (the type of things this program does, no other program would ever) in order for everyone to be happy.
