At what age do students enter University in the UK?
-
I'm just wondering how old students in the UK are when they enter into there first year of University. I am well aware that it varies but what is the normal median age of students going to University after completing high school. The reason I am asking is because I am going to be studying in the UK for a year on exchange. I'm going to be entering my 3rd year. I just want to establish how big of an age gap there may or may not be if I go into residence. I apologize in advance for my question, I'm from Canada and I do not know. Hopefully someone will be able to answer my question and or give me some great advice! Thanks!

Answer:
Their not even called high schools or secondary schools. Kids from UK need to attend following: 5-11 = Primary school 11-16 = Secondary school The following isn't required by legal law. 16-18 = College Some places won't be called colleges, but offer different courses. Quite a lot of people will continue to do college courses till their 20. This is because education is free from 16-19 and if you start a college course when your 19 you don't have to pay for it when your 20. Some people make the wrong choice or just decide they want to do something better or different is normally the reason for this. But for the average age of people going into university is about 18-22. Some people go to uni at 18, but most sometimes just take "a year out" to get a job, get some money and just take a break between college and uni if they're going to on to do a degree or something. So any age from 18-22 is normal. But you'll likely to find a lot of older people too, as uni is open to anyone.

Students usually go to university at the age of 18 in the UK after completing secondary school (high school). By the time they reach the third year, they're 20 years old, or 21 if they took a gap year. So your fellow students in the UK would be around the 20/21 mark. Have a great time studying abroad :) !!

The Education system in the UK is quite different from the one in Canada and America. Depnding on where you're going to be studying in the UK, depends on what type of school they come from before university. I live in the south where there is a three tier system, first (ages 4-9) middle (9-13) and upper or college (13-16) afer this we can go to a specialised college or stay at 6th form which is often a continueation of the current college/upper school. However this depends where you go. In the rest of the country it is often just primary (ages 4-12) then secondary (12-16) and then on to college/6th form. This then depends on what age they enter uni. If they are at a college come first time uni applicants maybe 19-20 whereas if they are from 6th form they are generally aged 18-19. Therefore the range of uni ages is normally between 18-25. it isn't too bad a age gap but I imagine it's very similar to canada and the US.
