Should I apply for my GED?

Can International Student apply for GED test?

  • Hello all. I'll go to NYC for ESL this fall. The program will last for 48 weeks. I'm already done researching on google but so far no luck. As you see, except for the language school that I attend, I'm not currently enrolled into any other college in NY. Am I eligible enough to take GED prep class and apply for GED test? Sum it up: Can an alien non-immigrant F1 visa student, currently not in any College or Community College, mid 20, take GED test? Thank you for your time.

  • Answer:

Your question is confusing. Are you trying to take the GED exam within the 30 days that you are eligible to enter the United States prior to the start date listed on your I-20? If not, then I cannot see how you would be in the United States, on an F-1 visa and not be enrolled in classes. Secondly, why would you need to take the GED if you were already accepted into a College and have your I-20? To answer your actual question, a foreign national may take the GED in the State of NY-- the eligibly requirements state that you must have resided there for at least 30 days prior to taking the exam.
