How do I study abroad?

Is there a limit to how many times you can study abroad?

  • I'm a freshman in college now, and realize it's probably a little early to be thinking about study abroad, but I want to prepare myself for it. I'm an engineering and french double major in the US and want to study abroad as much as possible during my bachelor's while still being able to graduate in four years. Would it be possible to study abroad 2nd semester sophomore year, all of junior year, and 1st semester senior year? Is there a limit to how many times you can study abroad?

  • Answer:

Studying Abroad is one of the greatest experiences you'll ever have. So do it! There's is technically no "limit" for how many times you can study abroad, but you will need to check with your home university regarding credit transfer and when you plan to graduate. For example, if you need to complete a specified number of credits or there are certain courses required for your major- they may not be offered abroad. In that case, you could probably earn credit by taking summer school. I studied in Paris and Italy and loved every moment. When you start searching for programs, I write for a website dedicated to helping students go overseas. It's called Gulliver (http://www.gullivergo.com). You can search more than 2,000 programs in over 70 countries. Here are some programs in France (http://bit.ly/tq11b). You can search by location, area of study, and which are approved by your school. Each profile has a description. Before you leave home check out our Prepare to Go section (http://www.gullivergo.com/prepare-to-go) to learn about funding, scholarships, housing, internet, visas, and other tidbits for your trip. We also have a discussion forum (http://www.gullivergo.com/discuss) where you can connect with students who are currently abroad or have recently returned home. It probably depends on your school. You'll want to check with your adviser or the professor in charge of study abroad at your college. I know at my university, I have to complete my last 30 credits at my college. You will also want to check to make sure that your college will accept any or all of the credits you take abroad as equivalents to your school's requirements. Mais, en tout cas, bonne chance!
