Basic things to know for becoming a foreign exchange student to the UK?
-
I live in America and I'm wanting to go to the UK as a foreign exchange student. I wanted to know some of the basic classes/things that you have to do to become one. My sister went to Brazil as one, and she said she had to take some classes before she went and write a couple papers, so I was wondering if someone that has done this before could help me understand all of it better. I would like to go my sophomore or junior year, I am currently in 8th grade. Also, if you know some websites that could help or that have a list of different cities in the UK that there are exchange families that I would be able to go to, I would really appreciate it. (: Please serious answers only.

Answer:
If I where you I'd start early looking for scholarships so you don't have to pay as much or at all, second be very cautious over what program you pick as your organization. Get in contact with former/current exchange students in the UK of specific programs your looking into to find out what the experience is really like. Of course the representatives of every organization have nothing but positive things to say about the company and the exchange. The experience and portrayal of a company in one country are very different from that of another country. Because of this don't try to base an organizations merits in one country off a different sector of an organization in another country. At the end of the year students with scholarships usually must write a speech on what they experienced during the exchange. With my old organization, we where told to not write about the negative experiences we went through. I.e. an exchange student was left in a small apartment with a host father who watched porn in the living room as she had to take care of a baby. The host mother was an alcoholic who wouldn't come home at night, so the host father would guilt trip her and blame her for the fact that his wife would never come home. The girl was left in this situation for two months as she waited on another host family to be available, meanwhile multiple exchange students where changed families.

You can go to Great Britain with our company, ASSE International Student Exchange Programs. You will have to fill out our preliminary application because we are an academic exchange program. We prefer students that have A's and B's. Once accepted you will be asked to make a collage of pictures of you, your family, and your friends and write a short essay about yourself. It's important to be as open and honest about yourself so your potential host family will pick you because they have similar interests as you. It does cost $8900 to study there, but the fees include: Program fees include: Round trip international airfare from New York to Europe and South Africa, from Miami to Brazil and Argentina, from Los Angeles to Asia/Pacific. Summer and Year programs between USA, Canada, and Mexico exclude airfare. – Fees also include comprehensive health, accidental death and travel insurance, host family recruitment and screening, non-English speaking country language training (School Year and Semester Programs only), and orientation. – Program fees exclude: domestic travel from home to international gateway city (special "youth fares" available upon request), passport and visa fees, school uniforms (if required), educational/recreational overnight field trips, school lunch money (if necessary), and pocket money. So please head over to our website at www.asse.com.
