What are the differences between Canadian and American universities?

Are there any differences between British Universities and American Colleges?

  • Apart from that one is from USA and the other is from the UK ! I was just wondering since I have had a thought that I might go to America to study after 6th form college. Just want a change of scenery really =] Are there any differences? Like about money, courses, accommodation etc. And would the qualifications still be of equal standards when I moved back to England?

I agree with politically correct on the whole idea of that American schools don't focus solely on the specific subject you want to have as your major, but this isn't a bad thing necessarily. American Colleges and Universities take pride in the fact that they focus on a more broad liberal arts education. The point of this is to give students other necessary skills for the world of employment and skills for life; For instance, you would take a oral communication class to teach you speaking skills for one on one conversation, as well as speaking in front of large groups. You will take a writing class to teach you writing skills. You will take natural and physical science classes, social science classes, fine arts classes, and math classes. Some of these classes may seem useless to you, but others will help you get a job when you chose to search for one. Graduate schools in the U.S. look for well rounded students who have had a liberal arts education on top of their major speciality. Most Graduate programs in the U.S. require you to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) which is based on liberal arts knowledge especially quantative, verbal, and analytical writing skills. I would also like to point out that most U.S. colleges do not cost $50,000, nor do they even come close to that. I go to a state university and I pay around $13,000 dollars a year. State University usually charge two different kinds of tuition, In-State ( if you are a resident of the state) or Out-of-State ( if you are not a resident of the state), out-of-state is usually a few thousand dollars more than in-state. Best of luck to you in your decision =)

There are enormous differences - here are the top three: Americans don't specialise the way we do, they study all sorts of subjects as required by the university they attend with a concentration in one subject. This means that they do not graduate with the degree of specialist knowledge that a British student would have and tend to spend another two years in graduate school making a total of six years of tertiary education. American universities are not tax-payer subsidised the way ours are so you are paying the full cost of your education. My daughter's college costs $50,000 a year. American universities grade all your assignment so you cannot do a year's work in the final week and still pass.

Politically Correct

To add to what PC said (which is all correct BTW): Our classes are more about lectures and weekly assignments than having your whole class be based off of a paper and a final. We have to pay textbooks, which can get expensive. In British classes I got the impression that you really don't need to go to class, it's not like that here. Some profs lower your grade if you miss a certain number of classes and just going to the lectures helps you understand the material better. Depending where you go some colleges are more residential than British ones. It's not uncommon at smaller colleges for at least 75% of the students to stay in university-owned housing. Housing also tends to be close to the school (I went to London, where I had to take the Tube or bus from my residence hall to the campus every day). American colleges are more based on student affairs and campus activities (probably because students live closer). Many students get involved in different clubs because they want to meet new people and try new things. There's probably more things that I just can't think of at the moment.

Entrance requirements, nature of degree and duration of degree. Most UK universities will limit how much time you can spend at a different uni and still get one of their degrees. (Language students do a year abroad, but apart from that people do not go somewhere else in the middle of a degree just because they feel like it. Some unis have fomal connections for just a few subjects, for example.
