Do I need to take the TOEFL?

Does a British Student need to take the TOEFL test?

  • I am planning to study for my Masters in the USA, I will therefore be considered an International Student. I was born and raised in the UK. Even though English is not my first language (since I am not English) I speak it 99.9% of the time, i.e more than I do my first language. All American Universities require International Students, whose first language is not English to take the TOEFL test before they are admitted. So what would I have to do? English is not my first language but I obviously can speak it.

  • Answer:

I think each school has their own TOEFL requirements, so contact the registrar's office at the intended school to confirm you understand their policy. I also went to the TOEFL website of: http://www.toeflgoanywhere.org to provide you with a starting point. I work with ESL students, and my understanding is the same as yours. Always contact the registrar for questions and consult the student handbook for requirement compliance is the best advice I recommend.

If you were born and raised in the UK, then English is indeed your (co-)mother tongue, regardless of what's being spoken in your household. Especially if you went to English-speaking British schools. But in case you want to be sure, you can simply take it: it costs a couple hundred bucks (which isn't 'pocket money' but still not a fortune) and you'll surely get a very high score.

If your first degree is from a university where the language of instruction is English, you are exempted from the TOEFL test.
