  • Answer:

I have a friend who also studied abroad I Japan during high school. He went without any knowledge whatsoever of Japanese but he came back with conversational fluency. That's not enough to take a class, but it is more than enough to be able to enjoy social life in Japan -- karaoke, purikura, shopping, school clubs with friends, living at home with his host family, etc. This is my advice to you. Since there are so few people doing actual high school exchange in Japan you will really advance your Japanese skills by going there -- even if you start from scratch -- and this will be a great component of your application to collew, and moreover will better enable you to use a college study abroad year to get an internship and start looking for career options when you're 20 or so. Any high school exchange program you apply for will make sure you are also enrolled in Japanese courses, so don't worry about your level -- if you go for a year and stay with a family who does NOT speak English to you, you will definitely learn a lot. As for your race, in my experience it is true that Japanese tend to view Asian foreigners different vs Caucasian ones -- but it is not necessarily in a bad light. No one will bully you based on that. Instead they will be fascinated that you are foreign and if you play up your American/British/Aussie/whatever nationality they won't even think of you as Cambodian. I really hope you go through with this, it will be an amazing experience. Studying abroad earlier than college will absolutely change the way you view the world.
