What do you think about studying abroad?

  • Answer:

It depends on exactly what kind of studying abroad you want to do. Assuming you're in college, a semester or a year abroad can be a great experience, allowing you to meet many new people from a broader range of cultures, social classes (American unis can be quite stratified sometimes), and so forth. However, transferring universities completely, as I did (from Johns Hopkins in America to King's College London) can be a huge change. There is a great deal of difference in teaching style and how unis are run between countries. So, I would advise you to check this option out more carefully. I much preferred university in America. As long as you're willing to put yourself out there, a stint abroad can be a great experience!

If you have the opportunity take it. I have two brothers who both have PhD's. During their studies they did study abroad and loved it. Some of the places they have either studied or done reasearch are; US, Isreal, Jamacia, Fiji, Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Columbia, Cuba, Brazil, etc. and I know that's not all of them. If you like learning about new cultures, different ways of thinking, studying abroad is a great way to do it. My brother once told me that after your Master's Degree especially it is preferable to study abroad as it may give you new ideas and consider new concepts. A growing experience. I love travel and envy them their different experiences. They actually got to see how the real people lived in other countries, not just the touristy thing the rest of us are used to. I'd encourage you to study abroad.

You don't indicate whether or not you are considering high school or college, but both are great options. High school can be easier in some ways because you don't have to worry about college credit transfer which, as one poster noted, can be a pain. Colleges look well upon former exchange students. Some even offer preferred admissions and scholarships. If you are in high school, you can find a list of all the organizations certified to operate in the U.S. at www.csiet.org or contact your high school counselor! Good luck!
