Have you hosted a foreign exchange student and had a bad experience?

Has anyone out there hosted a foreign exchange student before?

  • My family and I are thinking about hosting a foreign exchange student next school year. We really don't have any info yet -- so far it's still in the "idea" stage, as someone was talking to us about it today -- but it sounds kind of fun to me. So, have you guys any experience with this? Can you usually communicate with the person prior to meeting them so that it won't be as awkward? Any info you have would be great...thank you!

  • Answer:

Over the years, my family have hosted two students from France, one from Japan, one from Spain, and one from Madagascar. It was a great experience. The kids all were very polite and well spoken. We received letters from them before they arrived and got to know them through correspondence. We also received copies of the handbooks that they had (in English) so we knew what they were told before they arrived. One thing for all the kids. They all brought empty suitcases to take things back they couldn't get in their home countries. The French liked Levi's blue jeans (very prestigious, but very expensive in France). The Japanese student bought cigarettes. She didn't smoke, but was able to sell them and pay a lot of her first University costs with the money. The kid from Madagascar bought water skis for his father, who was an instructor but couldn't get American skis at home.

I've never hosted a foreign exchange student but I've known quite a few and it's really cool getting to know someone from another culture. You should do it.

it depends on the company that you are going through. When I was a foreign exchange student we found out about a month a head of time when they were coming and who they were and I communicated with her through facebook and email. I had to apply and about after I applied I got an exchange student and about month later she was at my house. I was a german foreign exchange student and I loved it...Definitely take apart in it if you can. talk to the company that you would be going through or the teacher or who ever is in charge of it and they should be able to give you more info. It is so much fun it really is.

My cousin was a foreign exchange student that lived with me. i knew how to communicate with her a bit. They usually learn some english before coming. you can talk to them but you may need to sign a few things too. the person may have a english converter dictionary that is electronic so they can look words up. it is really fun. you will enjoy it.

Why Hello

You can communicate, by letter, phone, email, or whatever. I think that hosting would be great and the student will really appreciate it!
