Benefits of Studying Abroad?

What are the benefits and the disadvantages of studying abroad in Japan? for college/university?

  • I have been interested in Japan for a few years. Recently I've been thinking of going to college over there but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go right out of high school, or to wait until after I have completed two years of undergraduate, would it really be such a bad idea to go fresh out of high school? Also I don't want to go only for a semester I would like at least a year or more.

Hi Jasmine, Recently, the government started a new program called Global 30. This program allows foreign students to study in Japanese universities entirely in English. Of course, you will be taught Japanese, but you don't need it to complete your degree. The G30 programs at the public universities have lower fees than the private schools, or comparable US / UK universities, so studying on one of the G30 programs may actually be cheaper than studying in your home country. My own university, Tsukuba (http://www.global.tsukuba.ac.jp ) offers the first year free, and waives the tuition fees for international students. We also have scholarships available for bright, hard-working students (about 60% of our students get scholarships). G30 is a great program which allows students to get the best of both worlds - the opportunity to live in Japan, while getting a world-class education at a low price - potentially even free if you work hard enough! G30 gets rid of a lot of the issues the previous poster brought up. We'll even guarantee you first year accommodation. Japan is not really more expensive the the UK or US, especially when tuition fees are taken into account
