Well, I'm a musician myself, and I looked at this career choice too. You should get a degree in journalism- check www.electronicinfo.ca for ontario universities that offer journalism programs. If you don't live in Ontario, search for programs at a local university. Also interest in music would be good- I think you have that! Experience is always good too- are you in high school, and does your school offer co-ops? If so, apply for a co-op at a local newspaper. It'll look great on a resume. You could also get experience writing volunteer reviews for a local newspaper. I, myself plan to do this. I chose three musical performances throughout the year of a contrasting nature, and wrote a review about each. Now, I submit them to a local paper. They love student writers wanting the experience, because they're free :) Hope this helped!

there are music journo's out there that have no training apart from the ability to relate well to musicians and write well, the key is being able to make people comfortable enough to talk to you, which is something you can't learn, then use this information to create a story that people want to read. studying journalism at university will help you with the structure of writing and give you tools in which to tailor your own style into articles and columns finding a niche can also help, are you into a particular style of music that you can use your specific knowledge to report on good luck!!!

The very best way to find out what qualifications - and (just as important) what other work experiance - you need to become a music journalist - or TO GET ANY JOB - is to find someone who currently has the job you want and ask them how they got there. Honnestly, best way. Because wilst the colleges and unis and suggest what you can do with their course - actually getting into a job almost always takes a lot more than gaining one qualification (I went to uni, have been working 7 years now - I have my dream job - but it takes hard work, commitment, and you have to keep working hard long after gaining any qualifications). If you want to become a music journalist then I take it you read music mags? And if you want to become a music journalist then you prob want to eventually work for one of these great mags or tv shows or such like.... ...... so I suggest you find out the e-mail / address of the journalists you look up to and write to them, tell them how great they are, how they inspire you, and ask them how they got to where they are now. Not only will you find out what it takes to get to the top in your field...... you may also make a good contact ;0) Work expeiance anyone???? ;0) Wishing you all the best!! xxx

oh dear I've worked with a loooot of music journalists. Most of them only did a year or two of university, and they're easily flummoxed by a well written press release. There are no credentials necessary. You need to be able to write, and to have at least some idea of what you're talking about. But I know professional music writers who don't fit either of these criteria.

I would recommend majoring in journalism and pursuing your interest in music seriously as well, especially the history of the various genres you would like most to cover.

Yeah do a degree in Journalism or film and media that someone else said. Dont give up on your dreams. Look at what it is like to be a journalist. Read and research. And good luck.x

Considering it is your dream job; you have not done much research. Try English and Journalism.
