I want to study abroad in Japan.

I want to study abroad in Japan, how do I do that?

  • I live in Ohio and I'm gonna start school this winter. I was thinking about doing OSU Newark to start then move over to the main campus but if I could, I would love to study abroad in Japan but I'm not sure how I would. Do I apply for it through OSU or do I apply for the college that I want to go to in Japan? If I go through OSU, do they have programs for long term living situations, or short term situations that are long enough for me to find a job and start supporting myself? Thanks for your help.

    Hi there. My mom did this exact same thing and stayed in Japan for two years. Go through your college, and they will set you up with a college and living conditions over there. They will also let you get a student visa so that you don't have time restrictions when you are over there. :) If you want to, you can apply to the college you want in Japan, but colleges in the US usually have exchange programs, and it will save you a lot of time and money by going through them. EDIT: I just found this for OSU, http://japan.osu.edu/study_abroad.php It's to apply for the study abroad program. Go for it!! :)

Generally Lovelord is right - your school will probably have an exchange agreement with a Japanese university. That makes transferring your credits over easier, and also you only pay tuition to your US school (in most cases). The other option is simply to enrol in university in Japan directly. There are many universities now offering full degree programs entirely in English, often at substantially lower rates than you would pay in the US. Scholarships are available in most courses.
