Working in France for the summer to perfect my french?

To France or Not?

  • This summer I have the oppurtunity to Study Aboard in France. The cost is $5000 for the program and it last 1 1/2 months. I really don't have $5000 lying around to spend on the program, but most likely I will be able to get a loan through my college which I will pay back after I graduate. I'm torn wheter or not to go. Next fall will be my last semester of school. I planned on working full time during the summer to begin saving up to pay back my student loans. If I went away I would be gone for 1/2 of the summer, and I would not be able to work. I really want to go to France, it has been my dream since I was 14 years old. I honestly believe that this will be my only oppurtunity in life to ever go. Once I graduate, I will have 30 thousand+ in student loans. By the time I pay them back, I will have a family to provide for and not extra money to be jetsetting around the world. Should I stay or should I go?

  • Answer:

Go now. Life gets a whole lot more complicated after college. You will be torn between mortgage payments, car payments, sick children, Disney vacations, DIY projects, husband's vacation preferences, in-law visits - and only two weeks vacation. Trust me ... go now.

Go your young! I did a lot of travelling and study abroad in college! I took advantage of it. Just think of it this way.. number 1! it's been your dream since you were 14yrs old that has to tell u something..follow your heart... Hey! I am paying back student loans, but if this is an opportunity of a lifetime for you...money is just money...it can always be paid back... I say follow what your heart says and go, especially if you feel this will be the only time you may get to do this... You only live once!! I took a shot at it, I'm paying back loans but I have no regrets..it was worth the experience! Good luck!

See I would say that our life is full of risk and challenges and its depends totally upon you that how you face and come clear from it otherwise it would be a disaster for you as your progress depends upon taking risk at the right time with right input. So if u think you are confident enough to take a risk and go to france then do your studies and repay the loan before you have a family to look after. But rather than going to France just to enjoy as you have dreamed to visit that place always, shouldn't be your aim. You can visit, travel to your lovely place anytime in your life for leisure. Right now, your priority should be your responsibilities and career growth to achieve your goals. You should look at the other side i.e. whether this study of yours in france would be beneficial to you in terms of your career growth and would you be able to get a better job afterwards so that you can repay your loan well on time.It depends on your potential to perform well then you would be able to get a better job & this risk would be worth taking. And you are the best judge for yourself. You dont know what would be the result of taking this risk,so you should plan your activities- how are you gone pay the loan, talk to your colleagues abt the scope of doing that course, how much credibility the degree from that university would be carrying. And when you have planned and confident enough abt what u doing, JUST GO FOR IT. Good LUCK.

i think you should go! opportunity of a lifetime?

i would definitely advise you to go. In the course of my studies, i went to two scholarships abroad - one in the US (i'm Polish), and one in France. even though it was very difficult for me to manage both of them financially, both of the countries being much more expensive than Poland, i never regretted the money spent. the value of money is what use you put it to. studying abroad is something you're doing for yourself - you're supplying yourself with an experience that can change your life, and definitely will change you and the way you see the world. i think it's really worth it, it's something you keep for ever. especially when you say going to France has been your dream for a long time. living somewhere as a student is much different than going there as a tourist, you get to know the place in a very different sort of way. i would say go when you have the chance.

Wouldn't it be much cheaper to wait until after graduation and go to France as vacation?

France is too weak for their own good...you should be alright as a tourist.

Your first priority shud be not to get deeper in debt. As to this being "once in a lifetime chance" I do not agree there. The first time that I travelled abroad was when I was 36 years old. In these days of globalisation and international business, the opportunities ti travel are immense. You cud always combine short ho;idays with work.

Definitely go !!! Studying abroad opens many doors, and you experience the world from a whole new perspective. I studied in France and I loved it ! However $5,000 is a bit expensive for the amount of time you will be staying. Perhaps you should check out the program I went with, it's less than $3,000 and it's for 1 month during the summer. It also includes various trips around France, and the university one studies at is the most prestigious in France, it's called "LA SORBONNE." So check out the links below, and bonne chance !!! (Good luck!!)
