Have you hosted a foreign exchange student and had a bad experience?

French/German exchange student experience!?

  • I REALLY want to become an exchange student in France or Germany. I have heard that you need 2 years of experience taking French and one taking German. I do not know if this is true, but I have already taken one year of German and am about to take one of French. I would like to go Junior year(currently ending Freshman year) and would like to know what I need to do/just your stories. Also, which country, if either, do you recommend? I have looked up everything but do not know which program to use because there seem to be many good ones. My school offers a German exchange but it is just for two weeks in the summer and is too expensive for that short of a trip. I prefer France but would rather take Germany than not go at all. Does anyone have any cool stories or recommendations for which country or which program? I'm just so fascinated with exchange programs and really love to hear about everyone's experiences and I just love talking about it. Merci/Danke!

  • Answer:

I personally prefer France. The language is easier and the people can be very friendly if they believe you are trying. Try to think like a Southerner with the French. Always use sir or madam when addressing them. Try not to interrupt without first giving them a Bonjour, Madam. and you'll enjoy your stay.
