I'm a US high school student looking to study at a UK college/university, what qualifications do I need?
-
Will my SATs and APs transfer or count if I go straight from high school to a university in the UK? Or should I just spend a year at an American university and then transfer to the UK to study as an undergrad?
-
Answer:
SAT's are not sufficient for entry to a UK University. Nor is the American High School Diploma. You need either: An IB diploma instead of a US high school diploma, or A high school diploma plus at least 3 AP exams, scored 4+, in specific fields (for medicine, usually sciences and math), or One year of college in the US. There is very little financial help you can expect for an undergraduate degree in the UK, as a foreigner. They'll pretty much expect you to be able to pay for your degree on your own. Most US financial aid won't go overseas, either. There are certain types of US student loans that will go overseas, but that's about it

Each university has its own different requirements for admissions. You should find a university overseas that accepts international students, and ask for its criteria. Some universities in foreign countries are U.S.-based, so you may have an easier time submitting your SATs and APs to them. If I were you, I would try to enter a university abroad starting right from your freshman year -- why bother spending a year at a U.S. college when you really want to be overseas? You can also start making your college friends right off the bat :) Here are some universities in the U.K. that accept international students seeking a bachelor's degree. Some of them are U.S.-based. You can click onto the "Contact" link on top of each page to ask their individual acceptance requirements. You will never regret it, and just think about how beneficial it will be for your future when it comes time to start your career. Good luck and have fun!
