Is studying abroad a good idea?

  • I'm not in college yet but when I get there I want possibilites. I want to be able to travel and see the world while I'm still young and not tied down to one place. So my question is, is it smart to study abroad for a year, would this matter after you've graduated and are looking for a job, and what is a good location if I were to study abroad?

  • Answer:

Are you kidding? Absolutely! I knew a girl who paid her own way through college getting grants and what not and was still able to get a semester in Rome. Learn the language the semester before you go and save as much money as you possibly can. It is easy to travel to lots of countries from Rome and they seemed to make it easy for students to take the time to travel - unlike some other areas. I had a cousin who went to England and she worked hard and didn't see much. Of course the friend who went to Rome went on the art program and took a light course load and my cousin was working in pre-med - could also have been the difference. The point is that any time that anyone can travel to another country they should abosolutely do it. NOTHING shows you more of what a wonderous world we live in and how diverse we can be - or how wonderful home is. Go! Go!

Yes, it's a life changing experience. Europe, for sure.

It actually depends on the country and the school's standard or ways of teaching. But I'd still say it will be a smart move. Not only will you learn many things, it will give you the chance to discover new places and meet lots of new foreign people. It will help you grow into a more sociable person (maybe), and still, will help you in your education.

It's a great experience it just cost a lot of money... being international costs THOUSANDS of dollars, check for transfers and equivalency of the program you wanna study .. go to any country you like, if you wanna practice an other language that's even better :)

It is expensive, but the school helps you pay if you don't have sufficient funds. It seems that traveling is for you since you have the crave of discovering new places, but this question should be discussed with your parents (if you still have them) to see if you have what it takes. Some people get home sick, so you might want to try the dorms first and then see if traveling is for you. Either way, best wishes and please please please be careful out there, Americans aren't welcomed or accepted just anywhere.

Absolutely!! Go for it!! There is no education like travel. It can be outrageously expensive though so if you can't pull of the formal education abroad just pack up your back pack, get some Lonely Planet travel guides, a eurail pass, a youth hostel card and a plane ticket to anywhere. The youth hostels are great if you travel alone (which really shows you what you're made of) you'll meet some really cool people with some amazing travel stories that will fuel you to keep going. My best trips were through New Zealand and Italy. You could also check out the peace corp for a year or two. Good luck!

Absolutely study abroad! As a personal experience it gives you perspective and helps you see the States in a different light. You develop friendships with people you normally wouldn't. As far as a career goes: If you plan on a career in international relations, political science, business or finance(the world's number finance market is in London, not New Yawk as an American would assume), it is an invaluable experience builder. Especially, in this day and age of globallization. You also get to rub shoulders with people who culturally are far more sophisticated than the average American. They are exposed to a lot more international travel and business than Americans are. By all means Just Do It!
