Benefits of Studying Abroad?

What are the some of the benefits and disadvantages of studying abroad?

  • I'm a US student, considering either a semester/year abroad, or going to a foreign university instead of a domestic one. I'm especially interested in studying art and education.

  • Answer:

Studying abroad is a great way to see the world while learning something on the way. The main issue would arise when you have to pay for International Student Tuition Fees and accommodations. These fees are much higher for an International student compared to what you will pay at a domestic post secondary school. Another thing you will face is a bit of culture shock - which could be worse depending on the type of person you are. Being located somewhere very far from home can also be very difficult to try and get home quickly and easily when an emergency happens back home. Those are just some of the negatives - overall it would be a once in a lifetime experience. You will never be 19, 20, 21 or whatever age you are, so live it up.

It may be difficult to understand what they are saying. Even if you speak the foreign language, they talk a lot faster than what you are probably used to. An advantage would be, seeing the world and viewing other cultures. I was told one of my teachers that you are better off if you know another countrys culture, so then if they are in america you understand what they are doing an how they do it, instead of looking at them funny!

Cost is a major disadvantage Also, you might not be able to graduate "on time" (because international credits don't always transfer correctly). For those reasons, I did not take the opportunity to study abroad. (Money, and finishing within the time constratints of my scholarship were huge concerns). BUT - if you can make it work, DO IT! Everyone I know who has been aborad loved it! Good Luck
