How to study in America?

How can I go to America to study at a university? (From Australia)? 10 points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

  • I am from Australia. I am in year 9 (Although i'm given year 11 work.) I strongly want to go to USA to study after year 12. My uncle and grand parents are in NYC, so going there would be very good. However, I do want a shot at MIT. (Masscheuttes State Tech.) I would'nt mind Penn State or an LA University. Can someone just give me some information about universities there, and cost of living (money is not a huge issue for my family, but the cheaper the better) , good universities in America ( it has to be a well known university/decent university.) Extra information; I want to study Engineering of Computers and Graphics and Computer programming courses. I wouldn't mind sharing a dorm room with another guy, as it'll make rent cheaper i guess. Questions; Would i have to get a visa? If so, could i still work while having the visa? Could i get a passport, go over there and apply for citizenship, do the test on civics and history then study there? Or would i have to get a visa first? 10 POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thankyou so so much in advance.

  • Answer:

MIT- Massachusetts Institute of Technology You'll need to take the SATs. http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-code-search As an international student you can expect to pay US$30,000-$50,000 per year. The well known universities tend to cost more. Yes you'll need a student visa. International students are only allowed to work 20 hours per work. Citizenship doesn't work like that. You need to have lived in the US for several years to apply for citizenship. The time spent as a student does not count.

Best bet would be to contact the American embassy in Australia. There are plenty of well known universities you could attend. The cost of living depends on the region. Larger cities are more expensive and California is especially more expensive than much of the rest of the country. You may want to cross-reference universities known for computer engineering with regions of lower cost of living.

Your chances of getting into MIT are slim to none. You will need SAT score of 700+ on CR, writing and Math. You need perfect grades in HS. MIT is going to cost you $50,000 per year. UCLA accepts very few international students . Plan on$50,000 for there too. You can only work part time on campus. These jobs go fast. You have to live and work in the US for many years before you can apply for citizenship. Going to school here will not count. You need to apply, be accepted, prove you can pay, then apply for a student visa You need to take the SAT. Www.collegeboard.com You can go on any US college's web site to see requirements for international student, costs, how to apply and an on line application. Most school's are going to be at least $30,000 per year. Most US schools require all freshman to live on campus.

Student visas are temporary NON-immigration visas. You are required to return to your country of citizenship immediately upon completion or termination of studies. US education, on average, is about the most costly of any country. Proof of sufficient funds for all school & living expenses, plus return transportation to your country is required to apply for student visa. Average costs of 4 year education for Americans is $250,000. Foreign students need to plan on at least that. NYC has a very high cost of living and very expensive schools, and the costs at MIT & Cambridge/Boston, Massachusetts area are ferocious. Also, these schools are extremely competitive, so you need to be among the best in the world to have a chance of admission. Check websites of schools you are interested in. Study them thoroughly! For engineering or computer programming & graphics, google search for a huge list of schools. NYU & Columbia are not exactly renowned engineering schools.

To answer your questions: Would i have to get a visa? Absolutely. You'd need a student visa for the duration of your stay in the US. If so, could i still work while having the visa? No. Student visas are not work visas, and as such you cannot have a job while you're in the US. Could I apply for citizenship? After your stay is complete, you are expected to return to your home country. You'd have to work in the US for a number of years before you could be eligible for citizenship, the operative word in that phrase being work. Going to school doesn't count for eligibility. You may be able to apply for citizenship if you move in with your parents, but you'd have to apply to US schools after that process is complete if you want to attend as a US citizen. Some other things to consider: 1. The selectivity of the schools you're applying for. You're probably smart enough to access this information for yourself, so I won't beat a dead horse. MIT and UCLA are already very selective schools and are not going to be lenient on you because you're not a US citizen. If anything, the application process might be more rigorous. 2. Money. As an international student, you can expect to pay a minimum of 30,000$ per year for an education in the US. That number can easily shoot up over 50,000$ per year if you attend a private school like MIT. 3. Aide. Understand that international students are granted little to no financial aide at US schools. You need to be able to come up with that money on your own and demonstrate your ability to fund your stay as a part of getting your student visa. Studying abroad is a luxury. If you can't cut it financially, there are plenty of fine schools in your home country that would be happy to have you. If you're looking for a list of schools in the US, I suggest you refer to US News and World Report's 2012 rankings. There is a top 100 colleges list available online somewhere, but again, I'm sure you can find it on your own.
