What college would be the best to study electronics?

My son has selected a wrong course to study in Canada. How to amend the mistake now.?

  • I am from India. My son, after completion of his four year engineering course in Electronics and Communication Engineering, wanted to go abroad for higher studies. In the beginning I did not encourage him but when I saw his dedication then I agreed and permitted him to proceed., He applied for a course through an agent here in India and got offer letter. The course name is Electronics Engineering Technology and the college name is Centennial College which is located in Toronto, ON Canada. As per the offer letter the course is of three years duration, fast track, co op course. It was mentioned that the graduates will be given admission in second year of the course. There was no mention about the level of the course, whether it is a post graduate course or Diploma etc. It was told by the agent that the course is a post graduate course and even the web site of the college was giving indication as such the course is a post graduate course. My son selected this course and paid full fess of the first semester which amounts to around 6000 Canadian dollars. However when he reached Canada he came to know that the course which he selected is a post secondary course and was very unhappy to continue the course. As there was no other option he continued in the college and completed first semester. Now he says that he want to change the course. He has to change the college also as Post graduate courses are not available in this college. Now I require suggestion what is the best way out. Whether my son can take a break of one semester and mean while he can search for a good course or He can apply for PG course in another college if he gets offer letter then he can leave this course and join for new course. The new PG course is usually for a duration of one year and 2 years study is must to apply for P R in Canada. He could not get his health card and work permit till now If he continues in the same course will he get work permit to work outside as this course is a co op course and the college is employer for my son.He is still due to pay a little amount of fee pertaining to the first semester and now second semester fees has to be paid in advance. Meanwhile he applied for Masters in two universities in Toronto, there is no communication from them so far. However the expenditure for MS is high. He has already wasted the first term fee in the college. He is willing to continue in Canada by doing some course. What is the best way to amend the mistake as such his P R process also should continue and he should get all the facilities like Health card etc and the expenditure also should be reasonable. Whether he has to inform to immigration department there about taking break or changing college etc. What about his study permit , will it remain valid. Kindly guide in detail as I am not aware of Canadian immigration rules for students.

  • Answer:

You were taken. Colleges in Canada are not degree granting institutions although some of them are affiliated with universities. They normally deal in skilled trades courses. Have your son try to get into as many different appropriate universities as he can. An appeal for advice/help to Canadian Immigration may help.
