How do you use Handbrake?

How to use the handbrake in Hyundai Santro?

  • I've bought a used Santro couple of days back. Now I find that whenever I try to start moving, the back wheels drag so much to leave dark traces on the road and stall the car. Then I realised that the handbrake may not be in the right position. But I dont know which is the right position for the handbrake. When it stays down does it mean it is on or off? Can the handbrake be switched off while the car is not in motion? Should the engine be on or off for that? Please help asap.

  • Answer:

OK! We know that the hand break needs to be in the down position to be off. You don't state the year of you Santro so I'll assume it is an older one. That could mean the hand break has not been used until you tried using it and the cable is rusted and now will not let the break release even if the hand break is in the right position. If that is the problem it can take some time getting it to release by spraying with WD40 and working with it. If is a newer car and under warranty, then let the dealer take care of it. The hand break can be taken off and should be while the car is not in motion, and makes no difference if the engine is on or off.

Obviously my friend, You need a little more than ABC (Accelerator, Brake and Clutch) knowledge of cars to drive safely. Anyways, the Handbrake is best used thus: Up is ON, Down all the way is OFF. Use it on slopes, while parking, and while resting at red lights ;) U can Put it On or Off anytime, No relation to engine running as it is Cable activated and not Hydraulic. The Rear wheels are locked by Handbrakes usually. U can skid ur car and turn 180 degrees using the Handbrakes and Accelerator at the same time. Let me not further endanger u by giving more info... and leave it at that to the experts(like me??) hope I have been able to solve ur query. BTW, Please consult ur Owners manual before using ur car, Best of Luck. Oh I forgot: Use your left hand to use the handbrake in RHD cars i.e in India.
