Answer:
I believe that there is no particular number which defines you as who you are, only you can do that. Do you feel a connection with your Native American side? Do you swell with pride when others talk about the incredible things Native Americans did? If so, then yes my friend, you are a Native American.

Different tribes have different quantum's to be a card holder. Before you get all gun ho about getting a card you need to see what you are in for. You will then become property of the government you will fall under a whole different set of rules.

cokedupchef, we don't "blaz[e] with with the Chief.." get your facts right. it's not weed. foxfire hit it perfectly. every tribe has different qualifications/BQ (blood quantum) specifics to being carded with a certain tribe. of course, it depends on whether or not the tribe your bloodline comes from is BIA recognized or not for you to be recognized by the government and american public as a native person. signing up to be native does place you under a whole new set of rules, the government does basically own you. they'll have more control over your life as a carded native than as an uncarded one. by default, this is not a possibility with any other racial group in america. if you claim to be of a certain race/ethnic group, it's accepted as truth, but when you claim native blood, everyone wants proof that you really are native. BQ issues are always borderline racist issues.

Legally you have to be 1/16 native american to claim head rights, so I suppose you have enough.

I am part Apache and my mothers side seems to not really embrace any of it. I have always felt a connection to my native american roots, so I think as long as you pursue your interest in the culture you have more spirit than some full blooded native americans! Now go get some frybread! j/k

By the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs standards you must have 1/4 or more native blood to be considered a Native American and if so are entitled under the act of congress for benefits.

i think souix is the only one that goes to 1/8th and considered native, all others are 1/4

You need recognition from the tribe and I am sure each tribe has its own criteria. Ironically in the NE the states are recognizing people who have 1/32 percentage to open casinos.
