What would happen if English was the official language of America?

  • for one thing, it wouldn't be ignoring other english dialects such as spanglish, Singlish, Boston English, ebonics and so many other things that influenced American English. There can't be a standard English because English is CONSTANTLY influenced. Old english was influenced by Anglo-saxons. Then middle english was influenced by Normans. Finally, Modern english was influenced by both Anglo-saxons, Normans and other languages. Would making English a offical language contradict the freedoms of America? The freedom to speak what language you want in your personal life? Not business life.

    um making English the official language doesn't affect your freedom to speak whatever language you want in your personal life... they're not going to FORCE you to speak english 24/7. making it the official language just means that all government activities (federal, state, local, schools, etc.) would be in english. right now, schools with a high population of people that don't speak english must hand out flyers in other languages so everybody can read them (for example, where i life, there is a high Armenian population, so students with armenian parents have the option of receiving flyers in armenian rather than english); this won't be mandatory if english was the official language. translators are local programs and bilingual ballots would be elminated. it would kind of be an "every man for himself" type thing; if you can't speak english, you'd just have to deal with it.

It would not contradict freedoms, because people are still free to speak anything, but it will send a message to them to learn the language or not be understood.

How much business would be lost if English was the official language. The business, corporate world, has found tremendous growth opportunities in appealing to the peoples around the world who don't speak our language. do you really think the business world would cooperate. A good example is the betting done on the Internet. It is illegal, but, it is also a billion dollar a year business. OK, officer ...lock him/her up for violation of....ridiculous. And, what about a crime scene. Suppose a crime was committed and the only ones who were witnesses were people who spoke another language. how would the police handle it....lock up the murderer or the person who spoke Spanish! And, what about health care. If someone had an infectious disease. how would we know about it...by outlawing that person and telling them they have no business being in America. Please stop the nonsense with the English only language bit and allow the free market forces, the general public and the educational system to handle it... Aren't there better things for congress and the White House to discuss and give attention to and improve the quality of life for everyone.

i think that it already is,my ancesters we beat or even killed for using their own native tounge and more and more the goverment are pushing to pass this bill where english slang or not will be the only language used here.

There would be conflict of people trying to preserve their most valued traditions; a civil war to be exact.
