What do you think of the current All Blacks Squad?

Do you think blacks were better off during segregation?

  • I was reading an interesting post on this blog and the blogger, who I must say is a sophisticated black woman, was talking of capitalism vs. socialism. She mentioned how today people in our country we see socialism as some evil force out to destroy America, then she goes onto say how socialism was implemented in America's past. This is where the topic of blacks and segregation come in. During segregation, all blacks lived together, worked in close areas, and generally were like one big-knit family. Black-on-black crime was practically non-existant, family values were strong, and the ghettos we see today were bright places home to blacks of all social classes. But, when desegregation began, the black doctor could now move uptown to live next to the rich white doctor. The blacks in the middle class could now move to neighborhoods w/ whites in the same class as them. This just left the poor blacks in the neighborhoods we all lived in. They were stuck w/ keeping it up and nice, and the whole 'big family' thing we had slowly vanished. Fast forward to today, black on black crime is large and growing, more blacks are recieving welfare from the govt, old black neighborhoods are ghettos, and the 'togetherness' we once had is now gone (and of course it's gone for all Americans in general). So, do you think desegregation played a part in this? Since it allowed us to go to places, and do things we never weren't allowed to do during segregated days--basically it was the key that let up leap all over from our gated community filled w/ other blacks... I find it interesting how she was able to knit in the relation of socialism and capitalism to segregation and the black community.. *Note, I was just somewhat retelling what she wrote in my own words (and of course a lil' from my viewpoint)* Here's the link to the post: http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/siditty-angry-and-black-since-1976

  • Answer:

There is documented evidence that African Americans in America as a whole did much better when we were a united community where we had to rely on each other. The problem was we controlled no resources nor did we create institutions that addressed our collective needs specifically. Therefore we were left with two options. The first option would be to integrate into mainstream American society. The problem with this was integration and desegregation was a one way street. While African Americans were abandoning their communities for "greener pastures" in more specifically White communities the loss of gifted and talented American Americans and the financial support of African American was never replaced by other ethnic groups of people integrating into the African American community. There was some integration into the African American. This came in the form immigrants looking to make their mark as entrepreneurs. Bodegas, convenience stores, liquor stores, fast food restaurants and pawn shops among others businesses replaced the grocery stores, markets and other African American businesses that either moved on or where forced out of business. These replacement businesses ran by immigrants have little to no vested interest in the community. The residents of that community are relegated to an existence of substandard dependency and consumption. This environment becomes a breeding ground for the impoverished and underachievers. The other option African Americans had would be to expatriate (repatriation) back to West African and Central African nations. In a cultural and national since this would have been immigration essentially. However from the standpoint of race this would have been tremendous for those African nations looking to advance. In the early 20th century a Jamaican named Marcus Garvey had a vision for Black people throughout the Diaspora. He envisioned the Black people would unite and create a sovereignty of their own. He envisioned that Black nations would take their place among the first world nations of the world. His vision was delayed infinitely by pro-integration Blacks and elements within the White government structure. The fact is Black people leaving America and forming their own nation of sustained growth was the scariest thing imaginable. America needed a fall guy, a scapegoat, a fool. This is all part of government control and taxation. The unspoken Black threat in America fuels fears, loosens wallets and diverts attention. Therefore this is not a Black and White thing. This is a power and politics thing. Black people are not the focus but merely part of the plan.

You do realize that " separate but equal" was a bunch of crap don't you?

leena

People are still segregated today. They're just segregated based on income now, not race.

Jimbo

Separate is never equal. And I don't believe ghettos were ever "bright" places, for blacks, or anyone else.

Sim - plicimus

Not really, during that time it was"seperate but equal", we were seperated, we had no choice but to live with each other, but we weren't equal. Our school systems were awful, unemployment for blacks was high, and hate crimes against us from whites were high too. I have to agree that the blacks in america are very divided, with issues like light skin vs dark, natural hair vs permed, high class vs low class and the blacks who have that slavery mentality that education is white and that they can never achieve anything because they are black. But you have to look at how far blacks have come since the civil rights, over 70% of blacks in america are in the middle class, more black men are in college than jail, unemployment of today is not as bad as it was in the 60s, you can definitely find more black doctors today than you could back then. So no, over all, i do not think segregation was good for black people, sure somethings have change, but i can say the same thing for other ethnicities from the 60s and of today. sure the black race has problem, and we know we have problems that we need to work on, but every race has problems.
