• A man named Horatius once stood against the Etruscan army by himself because of the sense of duty and patriotism he felt for Rome. Millions of men have fought for America for the same reasons. If we follow events closely we can draw many parallels between Rome and America. Rome was successful for many reasons, its people felt a sense of duty, they had courage, and discipline. America was founded by leaders who instilled these same virtues in a pioneer spirited people eager for change. Rome had good diplomatic relation with other lands and they extended citizenship to others. It allowed each of its states to run their own affairs. America has prided itself on being ‘The land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave.” Because of this millions of people want to be a part of it. Once claimed, states are allowed to govern themselves. Rome and America have both been known to have superior military strength. Rome had its legions of slave forces and America has its man power and technological strengths. Both Rome and America have been known to fortify their strengths by placing military forces on their lands. To keep its strengths, Rome erected political institution in response to the problems associated with having kings. It allowed its citizens to vote. Their public became much like Americans two-party system of Democrats and republicans with the use of Patricians and Plebians. Rome had an executive office that was elected yearly in their consuls and proctors which took care of both civil and non-citizen laws. Much like Americans modern judicial system, Rome created a senate to advise their executive officers and a watch dog type assembly to complete their three part representative government. Rome and America have spread their cultures throughout their prospective worlds, but here next is where the problem begins. Rome came to its decline and fall. Why? Rome’s values declined as non-Roman immigrants gained prominence, much like America which has recently begun to be called “an alien nation.” Rome failed to advance technologically. They had aqueducts, remarkable skills at engineering, and they built an intricate system of roads, but relied too heavily on slavery. America has recently given away much of its technology to other countries and now relies heavily on labors done for it. The internet, America’s road, is used by the whole world now equally as well. Rome ultimately became too large to govern from within, and its political system became unworkable. America too, has become too prideful, and has come under fire many times for its involvement and political motives that the rest of the world resents. If we follow events closely, we can draw many parallels between Rome and America, Hopefully not to the same end. ©
