Why do people get drunk to celebrate St.Patricks Day?
-
I think most people who "celebrate" St.Patricks Day just get sloppy drunk & maybe attend a parade. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland & credited with spreading Christianity in ancient Ireland. I think it's weird that people just get drunk to celebrate a holiday used to celebrate Irish heritage. Especially when alcoholism is a ethnic stereotype for Irish people.

Answer:
Understand what St. Patrick's day started out as... When the Irish were basically kicked out of Ireland by the English and came to America, they brought with them St. Patrick, one of the few touches of 'home'. The 'wearing of the Green' had been outlawed in Ireland so, on St. Patrick's feast day, these new immigrants remembered their homeland by wearing green and drinking toasts to those friends and families they would no longer see, and to the home they had been banished from. Many generations later, the true idea and meaning of this holiday has been lost, just as the true idea behind many Other holidays have been. This day is now a day (at least in America) to simply get drunk, have a party and declare yourself 'Irish' even if you have no Irish heritage.

I think the reason people do is because it is an ethnic stereotype that we drink. Americans seem to have taken Paddy's day and turned it into a cheap holiday where people wear green and drink green beer.. and dye rivers green.. I live in Ireland, have been able to drink for 4 years and have never been drunk on Paddy's day or ANY day. Also we tend to celebrate it as a form of being Irish and independence rather than the whole religious thing. It's like our 4th of July. We don't wear green, eat corned beef and cabbage or drink in the streets on Paddy's day here. I usually go to the Parade and then have a relaxed day at home with the family, maybe get something to eat.

im irish and i LOVE st.patty's day! yea it's a stereotype but its one we LIKE! an yea it's just an excuse to party but everyone parties when they celebrate don't they! we just party the best so everyone remembers it! an not all of us get drunk most are just tipsy, that bar would have to have A LOT of alcohol to get everyone drunk ha ha. i get what your saying and all i want to say is relax and have a good time, all you have to do is smile you don't have to get drunk. happy St.Patricks Day! stay happy or i'll be forced to sent the leprechauns after you lol (btw the leprechauns were red not green depending on where you're from).

You could say the same about almost all holidays celebrated which drinking is involved (New Years, Cinco de Mayo, Company Christmas Party).
