What Should I Include in a Newsletter for Gay and Lesbian Families?

  • I'm starting a newsletter for gay and lesbian families in New Orleans. What do you think would be the most important things to include?

  • Answer:

1.) Community Events & Happenings for Gay & Lesbian Families This could be a calendar with listings in each calendar square, or paragraphs with dates and times on what's going on and where, from bike rides to potlucks to classes, workshops, forums, etc. 2.) Yellowpages Section Contact information for anything from childcare to little league to healthcare professionals, anyone friendly to the community that is useful. 3.) Advice column People could write in with gay/lesbiab family-related questions/issues and get answers from a designated writer, or get feedback from other readers. 4.) Weekly Family Project A different activity, such as a craft or game or meal suggestion that can be enjoyed: this can be a coloring contest, or cut-out flags for pride, or recipes for cookies or fun dough, anything fun that families can enjoy together. 5.) Community News/Achievements General happenings in the community 6.) Featured Family A different family with each newsletter, interviewed about what makes their family special and the things they do together. 7.) "Fridge Door" Highlights the drawings from kids of families. 8.) Themed Piece for Each Newsletter Some of your newsletters may have more information on a specific subject, like, you may want to make a "Happy New Year" edition, or a "Getting Ready for Kindergarten" issue, or a "Gay Parents: Straight Teens" issue. 9.) Reading Lists Current publications specific to needs of the gay/lesbian family community, with reviews, if possible. (Books on being gay parents, books on parenting in general, books on time management w/kids, books that are good for age groups from pre-school to teens, etc.) 10.) Multimedia Resources: Recommended Websites, Movies, Music Albums, Links to articles, anything that is good for families. Those are my suggestions, anything that can help bring families together, things that are fun and engaging, that offer support and important information for today's gay/lesbian family household.

Definitely advice on: ways of meeting similar families in order to support one another. advice on coming up against prejudice and questions the children might raise. Profiles on happy, stable families. Don't go too full on about the fact that they're proud to be gay ... most people just wanna be accepted as normal and fit in. Give the facts. This press release that just came out Click here to contact our News Team Tuesday, May 09, 2006 Research: Lesbian brains react differently New research has shown that lesbians’ brains react more like those of straight men than other women when exposed to male or female hormones. This suggests a biological basis to homosexuality, rather than solely being a learned behaviour, say researchers. The research was conducted by the Stockholm Brain Institute, and required volunteers to sniff pheromones – chemicals derived from male and female hormones. Heterosexual women found the male and female pheromones equally pleasant, while lesbians showed a marked preference for female pheromones. Straight men and lesbians also found the male pheromone more irritating, while straight women found the female pheromones irritating. Researchers also found the smells were processed in different parts of the brains for lesbians compared with heterosexual males and females. Straight males processed the female scent in the hypothalamus, which is related to sexual stimulation, whereas male scent was processed in the basic odour processing circuits, or ‘scent area’. For straight women, the converse was true, with the male scent processed by the hypothalamus, and the female scent in the ‘scent area.’ For lesbians, both male and female scents were processed in the ‘scent area’. “It shows sexual orientation may very well have a different basis between men and women… this is not just a mirror image situation,” commented Sandra Witelson, a brain anatomy expert at Canada’s McMaster University. “The important thing is to be open to the likely situation that there are biological factors that contribute to sexual orientation.” Last year, the same research team discovered that the response of gay men to hormones was similar to that of straight women.
