Why do gays get so upset, when you say someone is acting gay?

Oh yeah, "homo" is so much less offensive! <---This is subtle sarcasm, if you couldn't tell. "Gay" is the term for a group of people that you've misappropriated to mean something negative. Academia uses it, sociologists use it, the government uses it, there is not a term that can be more official. No one official would ever use the word homo, ever. Because it's slightly offensive. And yeah, we can be mad, if our central minority label is being used as a flat negative. Also, you're obviously very young, if you think that the word gay is only used in that context. Maybe it's just so prevalent at your school or college that you think it's somehow okay to use it like that, but it's not, and in adult society, it's incredibly disrespectful, and no one would do it. You see, we originally had to take back the word gay. It was a slur, back in the very late 19th century and on. We made it into something positive, come the 1960s and 70s, along with the word 'queer'. It's well established, and we're not going to let homophobes take it back.

Because it's homohpobic. If a gay person hears someone say "that's gay" then it can make them think it's unacceptable to be gay. It's like when someone calls someone else a jew as an insult. You're not insulting the person you're disgracing an entire religion of people. You may think that gay is just a word that over the years just caught on but it all started because somebody was being homophobic.

Because the true meaning of the word is NOT an insult. You can just call them stupid, stupid. EDIT: I don't see the dilemma. "You're acting stupid." "You're acting like an idiot." "You're really f-ing dumb." I don't see how that won't work. LOL by the way, just as an info, "You're acting gay." Other than "You're acting homosexual." Also means "You're acting happy." It makes it sound as though it isn't okay to be gay. Personally when someone says "That's so gay" i tell people not to say that, at least around me because i think everyone should be treated equally no matter what their religion, race, sexuality or anything else. As you said many people think of the definition of gay has changed but no matter what, gay will always have the same definition. Try substituting it for stupid or dumb.
