Does using a VoIP software (Skype?) on a cell phone work well?

Using computer as a phone VoIP?

  • I just got clear's VoIP, and I was wondering that instead of getting a regular phone, can I connect the phone line to my computer and call from the computer itself... all of it without having to buy a new phone? If any software applies, where could I find one? (As long as I know, clear doesn't have software for having your computer work as a phone; might be wrong).

The short answer is yes you theoretically should be able to use what is called a "soft phone" which stands for software phone. You can see the basic types of voip phones at http://www.voiprater.com/articles/types-of-voip-phones for more information on each kind. The trick is going to be contacting your provider and having them provide you with the information to be able to log in using a soft phone. I personally prefer http://www.counterpath.net/x-lite.html which is a very basic soft phone. Once it is set up you will be able to make and receive calls using your computer speakers and a microphone (or headset).
