How do I fix my sound for Video Chatting on Windows Live Messenger?

  • For Christmas, I received a laptop with a built in webcam, and my best friend and I tried to video chat on Windows Live Messenger. We connected fine, but neither of us can get sound. What are we doing wrong? I have built in microphones on my computer as well. And I'm sure that she does, too. We both have windows vista and the latest version of messenger. I checked my sound levels, and they are working fine. I'm not sure what else to do and I can't find anything helping online. Can somebody please help?

    A laptop normally has a built-in mic and some webcams have a built-in mic - Maybe your computer needs telling which one to use ( set as default )? Typical audio set up Laptop x webcam/mic x Vista x WLM TEST SPEAKERS Right click on speaker icon in System Tray Select "Playback Devices" The speaker icon ( checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible Right click on the volume graph and click "Test" Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC Click "Recording" tab. To set required mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties" In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click OK Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later) Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays Restart computer CONFIGURE TO WLM Its good practice to disconnect and re-connect your webcam before you start - if you have been using it elsewhere the MSN software may have difficulty in locating it, even if you exited the previous program correctly. The reason being, the webcam software can remain hooked-up to a program and needs to be rebooted. Mine, I just unplug it from the USB and plug it back in to reboot the software. If yours is integral with the computer you will have to re-start the computer, use a keyboard shortcut or disable / enable the webcam from the Device Manager. Open MSN Click 'Open Menu' From 'Tools; navigate to, and click, 'Audio and Video setup' Set your speakers Click 'Test' - if OK, move on. Set your mic as default Use the slider to set volume and test. Click 'Next' This takes you to the video setup Your webcam should be broadcasting Use 'Webcam Settings'to fine tune the picture. Click 'Finish'

It is likely only one of you that is broken. Run the audio and video set up in Messenger under Tools to fix or determine which installation is actually not working. Sometimes WMP(layer) or other program reset the audio devices - check that your web cam's microphone is the default mic as it might have been switched to some other mic input on the board/sound card. That is in Control Panel/Sound/Recording-tab... scroll down since the webcam mic might be the last device in the list and set it as the default mic. Another issue might be the USB connection of your webcam - might not reconnect correctly after stand by or such. Hope this helps in some way. Best of luck to you.
