  I have only just recently joined Skype, so I'll give my limited understanding of it. Skype is just a different program by a different company, apparently out of the UK. Skype's primary offering is online phone services, where you can call either other Skype users, or land telephone lines. It's free to call other Skype users...all other calls are fee based. The connection occurs on your pc's speakers, and is remarkably clear. In addition, Skype offers other ways to communicate with friends on your list, including IM and video conferencing. Video quality is also outstanding, far better than Yahoo's, and you can choose whether or not to chat/video with one person, or a group. Besides the top voice and video quality Skype offers over Yahoo, it also appears to be MUCH more stable, crashing far less, and generally having far less bugs as Yahoo is known for. Downsides to Skype that I've found: Skype appears to be a far smaller network than Yahoo. If you're looking for new people to talk to, the number of prospects to appeal to appear to be far less than what are on Yahoo. That said, it still seems like a substantial network, and is international. When camming, your own video display is thumbnail size, so you can't really preview what your broadcast image looks like. You also cannot stealth like you can in Yahoo--all people see the same status from you...you cannot individualize your status to individuals of your choosing.
