India is currently NOT on the list of countries to which you can make international calls using Yahoo! Messenger's BT Communicator. Please refer to this URL, for the list of countries that are currently available : http://uk.docs.yahoo.com/btc.html

I am using yahoo messenger 7.5 phone out service to talk in mumbai - india on a landline number, and it is working quite fine for me....which version of messenger are you using..messenger 8 beta sure has a lotta bugs...and using that you cannot be using the phone out service at the moment...also check if you are using any proxy, or if you are behind any firewall. Last resort is to test with any number other than the one which you are trying to call. Also have a look at the messenger help provided by yahoo here... http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/

Sure, just type +91 (which is the India country code) followed by the full Indian phone number, including city/area code. For example: +91-11-2629-2289 Type the number in the text field at the top of the Messenger list, then press Enter.
