How can i get my yahoo emoticons to work on new messenger with voice?

have switched over to new messenger with voice (beta) and my emoticons wont work.I cant get them to work automatically in i.m.s or when chatting in the chat rooms.Was told i would have to go back to using the old messenger, but cant get the old yahoo messenger either.
