How can I deactivate Yahoo messenger?

Need to deactivate my yahoo messenger so that i can use yahoo chat?

    You can change your preferences in Yahoo Messenger to stop it loading automatically as follows: Click on "Messenger" in the top left hand corner of the Messenger Toolbar. Click on "Preferences". Click on "General". UNTICK the box "Automatically start Yahoo Messenger". Click on "Apply" at the bottom followed by "OK".

You can sign out of Yahoo Messenger also or even exit it, when you want to use the chat feature of Yahoo Mail (which is what I am assuming you mean by Yahoo Chat). Click the Messenger menu at the top of YM and then choose Sign Out. To exit Yahoo Messenger completely right click the Yahoo Mess. icon by your clock and choose Exit. You can make Signing out and Closing Yahoo Messenger one step. Messenger Menu, Preferences, General Category, under Signing out of Yahoo Messenger at the bottom check the box for "Sign out of Messenger when I close the main window." Click OK. Now you can just click the X in the upper right corner of Yahoo Messenger to sign out and close. Or you can use the Messenger Menu and choose Close & Signout. I would also do what somebody else suggested to stop Yahoo Messenger from launching when you turn on or reboot your computer.
