How can I back up my archived Yahoo messenger messages?

Where are instant messages archived on Yahoo Messenger?

  • It says they are archived on the computer. Where on the computer are they saved? How can I access them without using Messenger?

       If you use an installed version of Yahoo! Messenger the message archive is located in your computer. If your user ID was ineedhelp then you would find your archives in "C:\ Program Files\ Yahoo!\ Messenger\ Profiles\ ineedhelp\ Archive\ Messages". Please note that I've added spaces so the location will fit on screen and not be cut off by Yahoo!    Every User ID you've IMed will have a folder there. In those folders are the actual archives, saved as encoded .dat files. Technically you have to sign in to Messenger with the proper ID to be able to access these.    In reality there are applications which will allow you to read them without signing in to Messenger. I see no point in this so I've never tried them and can therefore make no recommendations as to their performance. I suspect that these applications can be easily found with an internet search.    If you use the online version of Y! Messenger it now stores your archives on Yahoo! servers so you can access and read them from any computer, again provided that you log on to Messenger.
