I logged in & as my offline messages popped up, I was booted. Are they gone or is there a way to retrieve 'em?

Yes!! You can retrieve'em your off- line messages!!! If you have it set as saved. Go to any of your contacts right click and go to message archive. and check the date of when was sent. Well go to messenger and click preferences / archive and set it to be saved so you never lose any messages. Hopefully you have set if not!!! you might have lose your messages off-line if that is what are you asking about. Good Luck.
